Just finished the most amazing Intensive Wheel Throwing Course at Eltorn Barcelona Ceramics in Barcelona! Run by Swiss Martin Loew (who speaks 4 languages) in a vibrant, well organised ceramic studio in the Clot Area of Barcelona. Catalan pasties and good coffee served as part of the course!

We all made several pieces which we left to be glazed, fired and then sent onto us ... so watch this space for the results to come...!

As a follow on from the opening night of the exhibition 'exotica - exotica N O I R' at artSPACE berlin, where black platters of Sushi - with a black theme - seaweed, black sesame seeds, poppy seeds - were served accompanied by Irish 'Back Velvet' cocktails, followed by black Lindt Chocolate balls.........

(The Black Velvet cocktail : 1/2 flute of Champagne (75mls) and a 1/2 flute of GUINNESS® Extra Stout (75mls)).

I decided to experiment with a N O I R themed meal with friends and was intrigued by the black edible things in the local spice emporium in Kilkenny, Ireland....

Black Turtle Beans from China with butter beans as a bean pate, black Spanish Olives and Beetroot Humus as contrast

Black Spagetti 'Specialita al Nero di Seppia' - coloured with squid ink - with black shelled mussels and pink prawns ....

Lychee and Apple Sorbet topped with Blueberries, which appeared black when contrasted with the white flesh of Lychees and the sorbet .....

Gwen Fagan in her book 'Roses at the Cape of Good Hope' describes the Rosa Rugosa flowers, fruit and foliage : 'The large round buds open into mauve-pink floppy, single flowers 8cm in diameter, with crinkled petals surrounding a mass of prominent yellow stamens......the shiny round hips are large and of a bright cherry-red colour' and the plant has 'mint-like fleshy leaves'.

The rose is native to N.E. Asia, North China, Korea and Japan. It was said to introduced into Europe from 1796 onwards.

In the Eastern Cape of South Africa, the Rugosa plant was popular in the 1900s as both specimen and hedge plants.

The rose specimens for these small oil paintings were picked from a hedge in County Kilkenny, Ireland

The oil paintings were based on pencil drawings of each rose ; 'Precious Platinum', 'William Lobb', 'Pink Ballerina' and 'Evelyn Fison'. The roses are set against either a ground of deep indigo or against thick impasto turquoise oil paint.
